Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How was I selected for this survey?

A: You have been invited to participate in this survey by your department head, principal, or district superintendent’s office. Your participation is voluntary. Your responses are very important to our research, and we hope you will take part.

Q: Will my principal, superintendent, or colleagues be able to identify me or my answers?

A: No. We have taken several steps to ensure that your identity cannot be revealed to the researchers or to your school or district. When we publish the findings from this research, no individual school, and certainly no individual teacher, will be identifiable in the aggregated reporting of data.

Q: Will I be quoted in publications about the survey? Will I be identifiable from my quoted words?

A: Based how the 1996 and 2006 survey results were discussed, we may draw on the teachers' reflective comments in presentations and publications, but such comments will be used anonymously and only where they will illuminate a point revealed in the numerical or textual data. It is more likely that we will generalize and paraphrase rather than quote directly unless there is a compelling reason to quote an anonymous teacher.

Q: Why are you asking these questions?

A: Please see About the Project.

Q: I am teaching more than one Grade 10 class this year. Should I do the survey more than once?

A: If you are teaching multiple classes of the same course (e.g., two classes of ELA 10-2), and you are using the same texts with all classes, then no. Just do the survey once.

If you are teaching different levels of ELA 10 (say, one class of ELA 10-1 and one class of ELA 10-2, or one class of ELA 10-1 and one class of ELA 10-1 pre-IB), then yes. Please do the survey for each level of ELA 10 you are teaching.

Q: I was teaching ELA 10 in January 2021 or February 2021 before the term or quarter changed. Should I include information from that class?

A: Yes, please! If you still have your text lists from that class, we would greatly value collecting that information.

Q: I am teaching ELA 20 or ELA 30 this term as well as ELA 10. Do you want information about those courses?

A: No, thank you. At this time we are collecting information about ELA 10 only. The findings from this survey may suggest that a survey of ELA 20 and ELA 30 texts would be warranted; but we do not have that capacity at this time.

Q: I started the survey but had to step away, and now my answers are gone!

A: The survey must be completed in a single session, so please ensure you have at least 15 minutes available before you start. If you close the survey page, you will not be able to come back to the place you left off; you will have to start again from scratch.

If you want to submit answers for more than one class of ELA 10, you may want to do so as separate sessions so that you don’t run out of time.
